Lovingly called the "City of Pearls," from the city of Hyderabad your tryst of Deccan experience begins. On this journey from the west to the south of India, feel the mayhem of activities in India's commercial capital, Mumbai; the grandeur of the Nawab of Hyderabad; get caught up in the whirl at Bangalore's technicolored Vrindavan Garden and Vidhan Soudha; experience the rich blend of vibrant temples and diverse bird watching at Kumarakom, and; enjoy the colonial architecture and relaxing hills and beaches at Chennai. Some other highlights of this tour will be the little-visited temples at Chikmaglur; the famous Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram Shore Temples near Chennai, and; the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets at Cochin and Kerala's peaceful backwaters.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN MUMBAI
Arrive in Mumbai, India's most cosmopolitan city. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of Maharashtra, the commercial hub of India, and an ancient port and trading center. This palm-fringed shore of the Arabian Sea was the British Empire's entrance to its proudest "Crown Jewel." A city of paradoxes, Mumbai is renowned as the country's financial nerve center, and also an important center of theater, art, music, and classical dance. Steeped in tradition, Mumbai is the premier city in India. Overnight at hotel.

DAY 2: MUMBAI / HYDERABAD
Fly to Hyderabad, a stunning contrast between the old and new, the traditional and modern. Built on the banks of Moosi River, home to one of the wealthiest royal houses in the world, the turn of century saw Hyderabad firmly ruled by the Asag Jahi kings, better known as the legendary Nizams of Hyderabad. Overnight at hotel. (B)

DAY 3: GOLCONDA FORT EXCURSION / HYDERABAD SIGHTSEEING
Visit the ancient fort of Golconda, the former capital of the Qutub Shahi. Your afternoon focus is a Hyderabad city tour. Visit Char Minar, the city's landmark, with its four minarets. See Mecca Masjid, Birla Temple, and the library and university. Salar Jung Museum houses an extraordinary private collection of the wealthiest man in the world. Overnight stay. (B)

DAY 4: HYDERABAD / BANGALORE / MYSORE
Fly to Bangalore and drive to Mysore (139km, about 3 hours). On way to Mysore, you drive by the city of Bangalore and stop at Srirangapatnam. Visit the Daria Daulat Bagh with its well-maintained gardens and enjoy a night view the illuminated City Palace. Overnight stay. (B)

DAY 5: MYSORE SIGHTSEEING
City tour of Mysore. Mysore is a beautiful city of stately palaces, gardens, parks, and museums. Later this evening you will visit the lush and exotic Brindavan Gardens, laid on the terraces of the Krishnarajasagar Dam. Overnight stay. (B)

DAY 6: MYSORE / BELUR / HALEBID / CHIKMAGALUR / MYSORE
The round drive tour to Shravanabelagola, Belur, Halebid, and Chikmaglur will be approximately 230km. Return to Mysore. Overnight stay at your hotel. (B)

DAY 7: MYSORE / BANGALORE / COCHIN
Drive to Bangalore airport for your flight to Cochin. Cochin is a patchwork of India Colonial History. Cochin is a beautiful all-weather harbor and a grand seascape, one of India's largest ports and a major naval base. Visit the Portuguese St. Francis Church and proceed to the Jewish Synagogue, which was constructed in 1568 and is the oldest in the Commonwealth. This evening you will enjoy a special presentation of the colorfully costumed Kathakali dance drama. Overnight stay. (B)

DAY 8: COCHIN / KUMARAKOM
Drive to the resort of Kumarakom (65km, about 2 hours). Explore the intricate backwater canals by boat and witness a way of life that is in complete harmony with nature. Overnight stay. (B)

DAY 9: BACKWATERS CRUISE
Boat ride through the series of canals and lagoons snaking their way through several tiny villages and tropical vegetation. The afternoon is at leisure to relax and pursue independent activities. Overnight at the resort. (B)

DAY 10: VEMBANAD BIRD SANCTUARY / CHENNAI (MADRAS)
Cruise on Vembanad Lake, site of a bird sanctuary. Waterfowl, cormorants, egrets, and teals are seen in abundance. You now drive back to Cochin and fly to Chennai (formerly Madras). Chennai is India's fourth largest metropolitan city. Overnight at hotel. (B)

DAY 11: KANCHIPURAM & MAHABALIPURAM EXCURSION
Kanchipuram and Mahabalipursm are also known as Mamallapuram. Kanchipuram is one of India's seven great Hindu cities. Later visit the seventh century rock hewn monuments and the shore temple, the only surviving one of seven. Overnight stay. (B)

DAY 12: CHENNAI SIGHTSEEING & ONWARD FLIGHT
Short sightseeing tour of the city. You will see Victoria Art Gallery, which houses a rare collection of sculptures depicting the story of the life of Buddha; Fort St. George, a 350 year-old-fort with wide battlements considered as a reminder of the British Empire and now houses the Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly, and; St. Mary's Church, the oldest Anglican church. Drive along Marina Beach, visiting San Thome Cathedral Church (named after the Apostle St. Thomas by the Portuguese who call it San Thome), and say farewell to unforgettable India and board your onward flight.
