Day 1: Arrival in Sofia

Arrival in Sofia, private transfer and check in at a central 3* hotel. Dinner at a traditional restaurant walking distance from your hotel.  

Day 2: Sofia 

Private walking tour with local guide to see all major sites in the centre of the city – Alexander Nevski Memorial Cathedral, St. Sofia 6th c basilica, Parliament Square, National Theatre and the Old City Garden, the Presidency, St. George 4th C rotunda, the ruins of Ancient Serdica, the flea market, the Museum of Sofia with the mineral springs nearby, etc. Free day in Sofia to relax and for own discoveries.

Overnight at the same hotel.

Day 3: Sofia – Velilo Turnovo 

Departure by coach line from Sofia to Veliko Turnovo ( 3.5 h ). Check in at your hotel and rest. Free time to see the old part of the town, Tsarevets Citadel – the royal hill with the medieval fortress ( from outside ), Gurko Street and the monument of the Royal Brothers, Samovodska Charshia – the old marketplace with many workshops, galleries, cafes and traditional crafts. Wine tasting of some regional wines. Overnight.

Day 4: Veliko Turnovo

Free day in Veliko Turnovo for own discoveries. Possible visit of Assenova neighbourhood with the medieval churches, Arbanassi museum village ( just 10 km from Veliko Turnovo, easily accessible with a taxi ), the nearby Transfiguration monastery, etc. Arbanassi village is mentioned for the first time in documents from 1538. The village was so scenic that Greek bishops from Mount Athos and from as far as Jerusalem went to spend the summer there.

Day 5:Veliko Turnovo – Tryavna

Free morning in Veliko Turnovo.

In the afternoon – take a picturesque train travel from Veliko Turnovo to Tryavna museum town, crossing the Balkan mountain range (the mountain, which gave its name to the Balkan peninsula ). Spend the day in Tryavna – the main centre of icon painting and woodcarving in Bulgaria. You can visit the Old Tryavna architectural complex with the Clock tower, the Old school, St. Archangel Michail Church ( 1192 ), Daskalov House ( museum of woodcarving ), many small galleries and workshops.

Day 6: Tryavna

Free time in Tryavna for own discoveries and walks in the area.

Day 7: Tryavna – Stara Zagora – Plovdiv
Departure by train to Plovdiv, changing at Stara Zagora Train station. Plovdiv is the 2nd largest Bulgarian city, once capital city of Philip the 2nd of Macedonia, the father of Alexander the Great. Plovdiv was declared the oldest continuously inhibited city in Europe, much older then Athens and Rome, and contemporary of Troy. European capital of culture in 2019

Day 8: Plovdiv 

Half day private tour with local mountain guide to visit the Old Plovdiv architecture reserve, awarded golden medal by UNESCO, with the national-revival houses, visit the Ethnographic museum ( the so-called Royal House ), St. St. Constantine and Helena Church, The Ancient Theatre, the Roman Stadium, Djumaya Mosque square.

Explore Kapana – the artistic neighbourhood of Plovdiv, with its colourful street art and take a walk on the nearby pedestrian street – the longest in the world, with many small shops, restaurants, cafes, ancient ruins from the period of the Roman Empire.

Day 9: Plovdiv – Septemvri – Bansko 

Take the train to Septemvri and change after to the narrow-gauge line to Bansko museum town. You will board the only existing narrow-gauge line in Bulgaria.

The narrow-gauge line was built in the period 1921 – 1945 and the journey takes some 4.5 hours, passing  through valleys and gorges, linking the western part of the Upper Thracian Plain with the Western Rhodopes, Rila and Pirin mountains. Due to the characteristics of the route through the mountains, the narrow gauge line is also known as “the Alpine railway of the Balkans”.

Avramovo station, situated at 1267 meters above the sea, is the highest station in the Balkans. Along the route there are 35 tunnels, 11 stations and 10 stops.

Arrival in Bansko museum town, check in at your hotel and rest.

Day 10 – 11; Bansko 

2 full days in Bansko and its surrounding areas for rest and exploring the nature and cultural sites.

Free time for possible walks in the region of Pirin National Park (UNESCO site). Many opportunities for sightseeing, walking, hiking or trekking, biking in the area exist.

The stunningly beautiful mountain offers many marked eco trails, a perfect blend of dense pine and fir forests, peaks, century-old trees, glacial lakes, small rivers, flowers, views and scenery of unparalleled beauty as well as seat lifts, chalets and huts.

The entire territory of the park is included in the European Union network of nature protection areas Natura 2000. Pirin National Park is listed as an important bird and biodiversity area by BirdLife International. Around 34% of the wooded territory of the national park is covered with trees above 140 years.

The town of Bansko has 6 museums open all year around,  all with interesting and different things to see and do. They are the Nikola Vaptsarov museum, Icon exhibition, Velyanova House, Museum House of Neofit Rilski, “Paisii Hilendarski” Historical Center and Ethnographic complex ‘Radonova House’.

 

Day 12: Bansko – Rila Monastery – Sofia (appr. mileage 190 km)

Morning private transfer to Sofia. En route stop to visit Rila Monastery UNESCO site – the largest monastery in Bulgaria, picturesquely located at 1100 m above sea level in Rila Mountain National Park.

Proceed to Sofia ( 1.5 h drive ). Check in at your hotel and rest.

Day 13: Sofia – departure 
Free time and private departure transfer to Sofia Airport.
